27 april 2023

Observed with the 6-inch last night.  Seeing was good but there were thin high clouds -- or, I should say, typical Bay Area water vapor trapped overhead.  Star images were great.  I went after Struves mostly at zenith and toward Polaris, saving the more accessible pairs for later.  I also observed the pairs using the Tasco 60/1000, using a very nice Nikon zoom I bought.  It's converted from a spotting scope zoom and works very well, though it's a little heavy for the focuser, which was designed for 0.965" eyepieces.  Great views nonetheless.  After I was done with doubles after a couple hours of observing, I had a look at the half illuminated moon.  Wow.  I just love long focus refractors, the high contrast and sharpness is hard to beat.  Even though I can see more detail with the 20-inch, aesthetically, the refractors are so much more pleasing.
