WDS does not "say"...

In my posts of double star observations, I almost always refer to "WDS" stating whether a double star is physical or not.  If there's an orbit, I copy the image of the orbital solution.

This information comes via StelleDoppie, which I presumed is a search engine for the WDS.  I've recently found out that this is not really the case.  The website author has downloaded data from the WDS, but the output and representation of that data on the website is entirely the result of algorithms he has developed.  It is very handy data, to be sure.  But WDS never states whether a pair is physical, not physical, or uncertain -- these classifications are calculated by StelleDoppie, as are any ephemerids and orbital solutions.

Given the elegant presentation and completeness of information available on the site, I presumed it spoke for WDS itself.  So I mention in my reports "WDS says..."  But WDS does not "say" at all.  Thank god no one reads my blog otherwise I will feel guilty of spreading the misimpression.  I'm not sure I have time to go back and edit everything out ("StelleDoppie says...").  But I'll be more careful about it in the future, and refer to the WDS & 6th Orbital Catalog data directly whenever I can, and cite StelleDoppie if that's where I'm pulling the information.

8 february 2023

Seeing was predicted to be good so I opened up the 20-inch.  I tried for JOY 1 again after dinner, very shortly after dark.  I had the distinct sense of a white appendage to orange Mira, but it was not separated as I would expect and it was to the north, not the expected east PA.  So that likely was atmospheric dispersion.  It will be good seeing tonight again so I will give it another try.  It might be the last chance this season (or ever?) as the weather will be unsettled starting this weekend.  I suspect the accretion disk which is the B star is too faint at this time, at least for my scope.

Seeing got worse and transparency was poor -- very long contrails stretched across the sky and were illuminated by the rising waning moon.  So I masked down to 7-inches and continued through the Struve list, in Orion.  Struve had a lot of near equal ninth magnitude, well separated pairs -- I think mainly because of the richness of the winter Milky Way there are many such possible combinations, and probably most of them will not be binary.

I should mention seeing has been good during the day so solar viewing has been good.  I viewed with the 6-inch in white light, with many small pores and speckling seen.  In Ha the prominences looked nice, including one large triangle nearly disconnected from the limb with sprouted a tendril as I watched which arced back to the limb.  I could see it moving as it got closer to the limb.

Had a pretty decent night.  Not the best seeing so I masked down the 20-inch to 7-inches and stuck to my Struve list.  A lot of wide, faint pairs which I would be surprised are binary.  Pointing accuracy is still well off, so I'll have to redo the TPAS as some point.  But with so much cloudy weather this winter, it's anyone's guess when this will be.
