26 march 2020

I think I've solved the problem with the Argo. It turns out it is likely the hand controller connection. I was getting intermittent connections at the HC itself. I changed the cables back to my original set-up (which is a little shorter than I want) and I had a steady signal and the argo/servo worked very well, no slips. So I will try to resuscitate my argo and maybe return the one Steve lent.

I observed for about three hours last night. I had another go at Procyon B, this time being able to use eta CMi as an analogue and using the 9mmx2 Ramsden to test the scale. With Eta I could see the B star but it seemed much fainter than what I think is Procyon B's. The separation of Eta seems a little smaller than B -- but it was really difficult to tell. For me it's difficult to confirm I have Procyon B. I am not sure of the direction, separation, and the star seems so obvious and bright I have to wonder if I'm seeing it. I don't think it's a ghost image, it stays in the field and I rotate my head etc. I need to keep trying and be a little more diligent in my comparison with Eta.

Seeing was rather poor, so I used my 8-inch mask nearly the whole time. Transparency was middling too.

Last night's session was shorter than usual. Daylight savings time means I can only start observing after 9pm. And after an hour into the session my Argo Navis encountered a bug and was not responsive. I'm not sure what is the problem and reached out to them for help. Seeing 5/10 but with some good moments, and transparency was 2/5 -- airplanes casting their beams through the haze. 533x with apodizing mask throughout except where noted.

HO 247 AB; 508; 533x: Clean split with seeing, 1 delta mag, fairly bright pair. I found the apodizing mask worked better than the 8-inch mask, gave more resolving power. The 8-inch was only a snowman.

4 march 2020

Clear Sky Charts' forecast was for above average transparency after dark. Unfortunately it was not so. A persistent haze was left in the sky, and was brightly illuminated by a waxing moon. I watched as the forward white lights of passenger jets lining themselves up to land at the airport shown out through the fog. A disappointing night, but I persisted to make what observations I could. So Transparency 2/5, and seeing a half decent 6/10. Seeing was good enough that in the beginning of the night I was able to observe 6 Plato craterlets (D, C, A, g, B), including the one near the west rim slumped wall (e), which I think is the first time I've seen it.  It was with seeing at 333x, but it was really cool to see those.  I left my apodizing mask on throughout the doubles session, which was for 90 minutes starting at 9pm.

BU 21 AB; 508; 213x: Eta CMi: Using as a separation distance gauge for Procyon B using the 25mm with barlow. Easy bright yellowish star with a reddish much fainter B, wide. [Based on the image scale, I definitely did not see Procyon B last week.  The separation at 4" was not much wider than the thickness of the wire, but what I thought I saw on Procyon was much wider than that -- so it was probably glare.  I will update the report.]
