On this night I decided to point the scope along the meridian line to the north. I wanted not to go over the same area of sky I covered in previous nights, and so as not to disturb sleeping family or neighbors, to keep the slewing motion, and motor sounds, to a minimum. I wrapped up the Argo Navis in a jacket to muffle its beeps -- though at the end of the night the unit was overly warm -- will have to turn off the LCD heater so I don't damage the unit this way. There were roof currents (since I was pointed over my own house, so I started out with the 8-inch mask until the seeing improved..

This was another long night of observing, from 10pm to 1am, with many objects found. I set up my 6-inch f5 for some sweeping, with a higher tripod, but I found that the movements are just too rough to continue with it, so I decided to buy a true alt-az mount. The night was warm with light dew, and just a joy to be out.

Seeing was significantly better than the night before.  I could tell from the first target it was a good night.  After observing a couple stars off my regular list, I switched to the Short Period list -- and I'm glad I did.  I made some of the best observations I've ever had.

As planned I started around 10pm and pointed south, in Virgo.  Then shortly after 11pm I pointed north, to Cvn and Ursa Major.  Afterwards I kept on the meridian line and worked across Boötes and then crossed over into Draco.

I tired out a little earlier than the night before, and closed the observatory at 1am.  I had my 6-inch f/5 refractor set-up, and did some Milky Way sweeping, trying to find various Messiers (M57 was seen and rather bright with averted vision; M13, M92, M24, M11.  Had a very photographic view of Albireo.  I'm really glad I bought the Droptix, it helps with low power views a lot.  My mount is unusable, I'm afraid -- too rough and choppy.  I am searching for a replacement.

Last night had excellent transparency and good seeing. It was a near new moon too, so under normal times I would have tried to go out. But it's difficult to justify going out, assuming I could find a place to go, when the rest of the family is stuck at home with little to do. So I stayed at home and observed doubles with my 20-inch. The best seeing was forecast to start at 1am, so I tried to rest in the evening and started after 10pm. Transparency was compromised by marine haze which always settles in over the Bay Area -- which is why the higher elevations sites are preferred. Seeing was not especially good and I was getting soft views in the beginning of the night at 533x and above. It did improve later in the night but not significantly. So much time on the ladder made my legs and back feel uncomfortable. I will need to be sure to stretch more and improve my muscle flexibility; spending so long on a ladder can be difficult. I should check into stiff soled shoes, to provide some added support.

I took breaks for snacks and something to drink. The weather was mild throughout. I think roof and other radiation cooling effected the seeing somewhat. My telescope's location means I'm pointed south to meridian and when I observe several nights at a time I end up going over skies I have already picked over, leaving few targets. I don't want to slew my scope too much lest I wake the neighbors with the motor sounds and the clatter of when I reposition my ladder. Tonight is predicted to be very good again -- so before everyone goes to bed I think I'll position the scope to the north and see if it helps me get new targets.

At the end of the night I lay down on my back on the patio, and used binoculars to scan about. Of course it's nothing like a dark site, but the views were really nice. Spotted M13 and M92; tried for M57 but didn't see it. I will bring out my 6" f5 refractor that I've been working on to give it a test drive tonight.

After three weeks of no observing due to cloudy weather, finally had a night out last night. Transparency was poor; in fact there were marine clouds to the east and south, which seemed to threaten to take over at any moment, but somehow I remained in a bubble of relatively clear air. Seeing was choppy so I used my 8-inch mask throughout. I observed from 9pm to about 1am, when I became too tired to continue (and the pain in my injured neck was too bothersome). It was chilly but I wore a warm jacket, and there was moderate dewing.
